Back-end developer

Full-time, remote-first

The ideal person will have commercial experience with:

  • Ruby on Rails
  • API development (Ideally GraphQL)
  • HTML / CSS / JavaScript
  • MySQL (MariaDB)
  • UNIX / Linux
  • Git
  • Automated testing (Unit testing)
  • Devops/Sysadmin skills considered desirable

The role

You will have solid experience taking technical requirements and developing solutions using Ruby on Rails.

Our stack is constantly evolving with a core system being developed in Ruby on Rails. UI is delivered by both Ruby on Rails and a set of React applications interacting with a core system API.

Working with a small team comprising of front-end and back-end engineers, UX, designers and product owners, you’ll strive to ensure that everything we ship is both functionally stable and scalable, covered well by tests and performant. Your experience will allow you to champion well architected business logic following standard design patterns in line with existing coding styles.

Responsibilities will include

  • Discussing and making decisions around system architecture then implementing them in line with working milestones.
  • Peer reviewing of code
  • Working with front-end engineers to discuss technical approach and requirement.
  • Reacting to and solving problems and support ticket.
  • Architect and implement (working both paired and solo) new features on the application. Some of these projects could last a few days, others will last several months.
  • Assisting with server management, software configuration, devops tools and development process.
