A detailed case study from NHS patient, Hayley, in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

Hayley

54, sleeping badly for 4–6 months

Over the course of four to six months, Hayley had found it increasingly difficult to get a good night’s sleep. It had got to the point that on some nights she wouldn’t manage to sleep at all. Keen to get to the bottom of why she wasn’t sleeping, Hayley signed up to Sleepstation.

To get started, Hayley began with a week-long review of her sleep and wellbeing. She kept track of how she was sleeping each night using our online sleep diary, noting down details such as what time she went to bed, when she woke up and whether she experienced any disturbance to her sleep during the night.

She also answered questions about how she was feeling and any impact her poor sleep was having on her ability to go about her daily life. At the end of this review week, all of the information that Hayley had provided was brought together to build a clear picture of her current sleep and the effects it was having on her health and wellbeing.

Average sleep time per night

Before Sleepstation

6h 51m

After Sleepstation

7h 53m

Hayley’s sleep diaries revealed that she was spending a lot of time awake at night. She was only managing to sleep for 68% of the time she was in bed, which meant that her sleep efficiency was poor and, on average, she was getting just under seven hours of sleep per night.

Unsurprisingly, she was waking up feeling unrefreshed and Hayley reported that her poor sleep was having a severe impact on her ability to go about her daily life. She also reported symptoms of moderate depression and severe anxiety.

Before Sleepstation

  • 13/27 Depression symptoms – Moderate
  • 16/21 Anxiety symptoms – Severe

After Sleepstation

  • 0/27 Depression symptoms – None
  • 0/21 Anxiety symptoms – None

All of this information was used to tailor a multi-step sleep improvement plan that would allow Hayley to explore why she was sleeping poorly and enable her to rebuild healthy sleep. She received a new sleep schedule to follow, access to weekly therapy sessions and a wealth of resources on sleep.

Hayley began following her new sleep schedule and got to work to unravel the root causes behind her sleepless nights. She discovered a range of techniques that could help her calm her mind and fall asleep easily at night and was soon seeing improvements to her sleep.

Hayley appreciated the guidance and reassurance she received from her sleep coaches, knowing she could turn to them when she doubted herself and always receiving helpful advice and support.

Sleep efficiency

Before Sleepstation

68%

After Sleepstation

95%

By the end of her therapy, Hayley had completely turned her sleep around. Her sleep efficiency is now a very healthy 95% meaning that she’s spending only 5% of her time in bed awake. She’s sleeping for longer each night and has gained over seven hours of extra sleep per week.

Alongside her excellent sleep improvements, she also reports that her symptoms of anxiety and depression have now completely resolved and she’s no longer experiencing any impairment to her ability to function during the day.

Impact on next day function

We use the Work and Social Adjustment Scale (WSAS) to assess how a person’s sleep problem affects them day to day. These scores are reviewed at assessment and weekly throughout therapy.

WSAS score

Before

35/40 – Severe impairment

After

0/40 – No impairment

The improvements Hayley’s made to her sleep and wellbeing have been fantastic. Not only has she overcome her sleep problem, she’s also now equipped with the skills and knowledge to keep her sleep on track in the future. Very well done Hayley!

I am so pleased with Sleepstation. This all has really changed my life.
