Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes service feedback

A detailed case study from NHS patient, Garry, in Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes.

Garry

65, sleeping badly for 1–2 years

When Garry signed up with Sleepstation, he’d been having trouble with his sleep for over a year. His poor sleep was making him feel extremely tired all the time and this was having a detrimental effect on him at work.

He decided this couldn’t go on and so signed up with Sleepstation, starting off with a week-long sleep and wellness review.

This review enables us to build a comprehensive picture of each person’s individual sleep problem, how it’s affecting their life and what they hope to achieve. To this end, Garry completed a week of daily sleep diaries, logging his bedtimes, wake times, how often he woke in the night and how long it took to get to sleep.

He also reflected on how he felt each day and the impact his sleep was having on his overall wellbeing.

From this very first week and throughout, Garry also had access to a team of sleep coaches, allowing him to ask any questions and receive personalised guidance and feedback.

Sleep efficiency

Before Sleepstation

70%

After Sleepstation

91%

This was having a knock-on effect on his days, too. He reported symptoms of mild depression and anxiety and a moderate impairment to his ability to carry out everyday tasks.

At the end of this initial week, we reviewed everything Garry had told us. His diaries showed that he was averaging just over six hours of sleep a night but his sleep efficiency was a poor 70%. This meant he was spending almost a third of each night in bed wide awake.

With all this in mind, we designed a personalised, multi-step sleep plan for Garry, aiming to help him improve his sleep and feel more energised and refreshed during the day.

Garry got straight to work, accessing weekly therapy sessions and frequently checking in with his sleep coaches. He appreciated the methodical, step-by-step approach that helped him build his understanding incrementally and introduce techniques to adapt his thoughts and behaviours around sleep.

Before Sleepstation

  • 8/27 Depression symptoms – Mild
  • 5/21 Anxiety symptoms – Mild

After Sleepstation

  • 0/27 Depression symptoms – None
  • 0/21 Anxiety symptoms – None

By the end of the course, Garry was amazed by the progress he’d made. He’d gained almost 17 hours of extra sleep a week and his sleep efficiency had rocketed to a fantastic 91%!

This has had a huge effect on his daytimes, too. He now reports no signs of depression or anxiety and has virtually eradicated any negative impact his sleep was having on his daytime functioning.

Impact on next day function

We use the Work and Social Adjustment Scale (WSAS) to assess how a person’s sleep problem affects them day to day. These scores are reviewed at assessment and weekly throughout therapy.

WSAS score

Before

17/40 – Severe impairment

After

1/40 – Low impairment

Garry’s experience shows exactly why it’s important to have the right support and structure in place when it comes to taking back control of your sleep. With personalised feedback and guidance throughout, Garry was able to take on board the advice he was given and make excellent progress that he can now maintain going forward. Well done, Garry!
